Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME
Myalgic
encephalitis or ME, is one of a group of diagnoses along with post viral
fatigue syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, or ‘yuppy flu', used to describe a
condition in which the sufferer feels constantly exhausted. Consultants seem to prefer the term Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
It often follows a
viral infection of some kind, but up to now there has been no definitive
explanation as to why it occurs, and no consistently effective medical cure. In
many cases the condition lasts for years and is a real burden to the sufferer
and those around them.
Shiatsu practitioners are often faced with ME or
similar, maybe less chronic cases of tiredness and general lack of energy. From
our perspective, which comes from traditional oriental medicine, the seat of
the problem is often to be found in the kidneys. In the oriental body model,
the kidneys are seen as batteries, imparting energy to enable all the other
organs to function properly. It follows that a deficiency in Kidney energy
leads to a general depletion in the overall efficiency of the body's systems,
leading to a general slowing down and lack of impetus.
Clients have found that
a course of treatments designed to boost Kidney energy can help to restore
normal body function and increase energy.
